IT Security Tips for Remote and Hybrid Teams

The shift to remote and hybrid working has been transformative for UK businesses. But it's also dramatically expanded the attack surface for cybercriminals. When your team works from home, coffee shops, or client sites, the security controls you have in the office don't automatically follow them.
Here's how to close the gaps.
1. Use a VPN for All Remote Access
A Virtual Private Network (VPN) encrypts your team's internet connection and routes it through a secure server — protecting data in transit and preventing eavesdropping on public Wi-Fi networks.
Make VPN use mandatory for anyone accessing company systems remotely.
2. Enforce Multi-Factor Authentication
MFA is the single most effective control against account compromise. Even if an attacker gets hold of a password, they can't log in without the second factor. Enable it on every business application — email, CRM, cloud storage, everything.
3. Manage Devices Properly
Personal devices used for work are a significant risk. Implement a Mobile Device Management (MDM) solution to enforce security policies — such as screen lock, encryption, and remote wipe — on all devices that access company data.
4. Secure Your Home Router
Many home routers run outdated firmware with known vulnerabilities. Encourage your team to:
- Change the default admin password
- Enable WPA3 encryption (or WPA2 if WPA3 isn't available)
- Keep firmware updated
- Use a separate guest network for personal devices
5. Train Your Team Regularly
Human error is the leading cause of security incidents. Regular, engaging security awareness training helps your team recognise phishing attempts, handle data correctly, and respond appropriately to suspicious activity.
6. Have a Clear Incident Response Process
What should your team do if they think they've been phished, or if their laptop is stolen? Make sure everyone knows the answer — and that there's a clear, simple process to follow.
7. Review Access Controls
Remote working often leads to "access creep" — people accumulating access to systems they no longer need. Review access rights regularly and apply the principle of least privilege: give people access only to what they need to do their job.
